Christiania - The Scandinavian Sanctuary of Freedom & Cannabis

If Tolkien Would Have Designed a Village...

Christiania is a mythical part of Copenhagen. A unique village which attracts loads of curiosity.

Christiania is approximately 35 hectares big and lies in a lush, green area, on both sides of the old moat grave in the Christianshavn district. The free city attracts a lot of visitors, who are attracted to the excitement and mystery of this splendid neighborhood and its inhabitants (and the weed of course).

Pusher Street - A place that can fill every cannabis desire you might have.

There are three entrances to Christiania. The main entrance on Prinsessgade leads directly into the infamous Pusher street, where lighter drugs like cannabis were sold open in recent decades. In recent years, the police have increased the tension of what passes in and out through the area and the villagers themselves have talked against the drug dealing getting out of hand. Christiania stands for freedom, not profit from drugs. With that being said, Christiania still believes in the freedom of having access to cannabis and smoking it freely.

The inhabitants of this different and curious part of Copenhagen consist of a brilliant mix of hippies, environmentalists, artists, craftsmen, freelancers and people with alternative lifestyles. Signs of alcohol or drug related addiction problems are common, but who cares, everyone in Christiania are awesome believe me on that.

Three yellow dots on a red background is the symbol of Christiania and can be seen on flags, signs and pins everywhere. Christiania collective society does has some rules and the most important decisions are taken at their townhall meeting. The sanctuary's regulations include, among other things, the absence of heavy drugs, weapons and violence.

Bicycles are the way of transport in the car-free Christiania.

Christiania has an atmosphere that is not found anywhere else in the Scandinavian region. It's completely car free and along streets and trails, where dogs run loose, there are strange artworks, murals and graffiti artwork with messages of love and free drugs. There are a couple of cafes and restaurants, some trade boutiques and a small market. In some places, large signs indicate that there is a photo ban, which it is.

The buildings in Christiania are an entire Steemit post in itself. The Christianites live in everything from old barracks, railroad wagons, caravans and little huts to creative creations that are not similar to anything I have ever seen before. Here and there new small houses are built in modern architectural style over time, thus the village is naturally growing slowly and steady. All buildings are owned collectively and rented. Here nobody can make any real estate profit.

Amongst Copenhageners the opinions (in general) are divided on Christiania. Many people think it should be shut-down, while others see it as a much needed "spiritual break" in today's consumer society. The Christianites have been struggling to buy the entire area from the Danish state in recent years. However, the authorities have gotten a lot of pressure from citizens to "normalize" Christiania so it can be incorporated into laws and regulations in the Danish society.

Christiania is situated around a small lake, along side of one of Copenhagen's old ramparts.

Certainly, there are also many construction companies that would welcome this, to build homes in this attractive area in central Copenhagen.

I personally hope that the Christianites succeed in buying the area from the state. I have visited this magical village many times and its above and beyond what one can expect. You are greeted with smiles from the villagers and the green open fields make me feel like I am walking around in the Shire (being really really high also helps to set the mood). If you have not visited Christiania I strongly recommend you do so while its still there for us to enjoy it in its original form. You don't need to be a stoner to enjoy Christiania, but if you are a stoner you will never feel as home as you do when you enter Christiania.

What an interesting city. They should either leave the state alone or legalize cannabis. If they choose to take over Christiania and demolish all the cannabis retailers they only create another illegal market. They would also destroy all the culture they have there. Would be sad to see such an amazing thing vanish.

Yes good points mate, the world would become a little less colorful without Christiania, that's for sure=)

Haha okay nice, thank you, I will check out your account :D

I've always wanted to visit Christiania.
The idea of a self organized community where decisions are taken collectivelly and drugs are legallized really appeals to me.
Thanks for sharing this article and nice pictures btw! Did you take them?

No the pictures are taken from Christiania official site, which you can find a link to at the bottom of the post :) The pictures are free to use for anybody and they have a bunch more if your interested in seeing more!

You can't take pictures there, they have a "photo-ban" (at least in the city), which is why I think they have an album of photos on their website that people can use when wanting to show this beautiful place!

Glad you liked my writing, peace dude! :)
