On our tour of Inle Lake, we had decided to visit the ruined tempe of Shwe Indein Pagoda.
The temple is down quite a long river away from the main lake (maybe 20 or 30 minutes to get there from the South of the main lake. Even so, the river is a nice change from the main lake, with locals chilling, watering their livestock and walking along the sides of the riverbank.

Tale of 2 temples

The temple has 2 main areas, one of which is overgrown and made from bricks and stone. This part has an unworldly and timeless feel to it and speaks of past civilisations.

There is not much definite information on these temples, but they are suppopsedly built under th Reign of Narapatisithu. This would date them to around 1138–1211 AD, so they are nearly 900 years old.

The structures and nature moving into them provided a great photographic journey which I could have spent days documenting, but I only had a couple of hours!!

Quick and easy Photography tips.

1- Switch lenses.

Switch lenses when photographing a site like this, it will help you to get different perspetives.
I switched between my ultrawide (16-35 ) and zoom (70-200) lenses to get different effects.
The Ultrawide can give you a sense of the scale, and zoom will help to focus on smaller details.

2- Bracket. (or set your smartphone to HDR)

Bracketing is taking photos at different exposures. Most SLR cameras will do this (smartphones would usually be set to HDR mode ). If you're not sure how to do this, consult the manual for your camera.

When your camea meters something dark like a temple, it will adjust the photograph to make it brighter . This can cause the sky to be "blown out" (It just looks white )
So, by bracketing you will have a selection of photographs at different exposures, and usually one or 2 of them will be correctly exposed.

You can also set the number of photographs to be taken and the difference in exposure (f-stop). 3 photos at 1 F-stop is usually enough, but when there is a large range of shadows and bright light you might want to take 5 or more.

HDR

If you use or tripod (or have a very steady hand) you can then combine bracketed images in software afterwards to get that HDR effect. ( Which can be great or horrific).

Modern smartphones can do this automatically you lucky bastards. :)

Still, having a digital camera or bracketing by yourself can give you much more creative control over the process.
