Close to Sighisoara, in the village of Cund, is this oasis where nature was left alone. Here is the Green Retreat Valley, a place where nature and tradition create the perfect countryside where you can escape from stress, chaos, madness and agitation.
A family has restored several old houses in the area, which are now the accommodation options for visitors. Also from here you can go on various excursions or enroll in painting or joinery courses. Bicycle rides or truffle hunt are also dont missing here, 2 activities that you should try if you reach the Retreat Verde Valley. You can see that at this address you can also organize events, be it a private party or a special wedding.
Valea Verde Retreat is a Transylvanian story spot I visited on last week's trip and about which no matter how I write, it will not be enough it anyway.
Any beautiful trip begins with a wonderful road. It's not just a cliche quote that circulates over the internet, but a reality that I experience on every holiday. The road helps you get into the holiday condition, connect to the destination you want to visit, relax, even if most of the time the road is long, tiring and sometimes not even very interesting.
The first thing that will surprise you when you go to Cund village in Transylvania is the very road. When booking, you will receive a confirmation email with useful information, including the way to the resort. About the last 8 kilometers, from the national road to Cund, you are told to go slowly and enjoy the scenery, because the road is bad. Okay, stupid little is said ... it's a paved road that has not seen an asphalt centimeter but it's perfect as a preparation to get into the mood of a relaxing vacation. The 8 kilometers must go slowly, indefinitely, by putting your last worries about service or other obligations in order, if you leave aside the worries about the car. Inspiration also helps you with the scenery, a haze of green hills in the summer. The phone signal disappears as soon as you left the national road. The Internet off.
Once in the village, the Green Valley is very easy to identify. It is the main "business" of the village and all the villagers are very proud that their village so many tourists come, people from Bucharest, from the country and from all over the world. If you do not manage with the email confirmation, you will surely find a villager to explain.
Outside, the Verde Valley Retreat does not look like a Saxon home inhabited by a large family. Large, simple gates of wood embrace the entrance to the resort. A parking sign helps you to realize that it is more than a house.
But anyway, the Retreat Valley is actually a home. It is the home of Jonas and Ulrike Schaefer, two Germans who arrived in Romania many years ago and settled their home in the village at the end of the civilization, Cund. Over time, their home has become the home of others, so the Retreat Valley is constantly full of guests. From all over the world.
I wanted to get here because, from my point of view, it is fixed what should be all the small hotels and hostels in Romania: "real", simple, with impeccable services offered from the soul, strongly anchored in the reality of the Romanian village.
I will try to outline how you can imagine the Green Retreat Valley. In the village of Cund, close to the border between the Saxon and the Saxon area, Jonas and Ulrike Schaefer have created a small resort with 4 individual apartments (mini-cottages), a restaurant and an outdoor and (indoor) wooden gazebo). Property is generous, but not as great as to discourage or affect the feeling of intimacy, "home". The apartments or the houses have a generous room with a bathroom and a nice prispa in front of the entrance. Apartment 1 also has a living room, which makes it perfect for families.
Rooms are not luxurious or opulent. The furniture is simple, but each room has one element that reminds us that we are in an award winning resort: a comfortable reading chair, a special lamp, a decoration element ... The rooms have a TV, but ours has closed state throughout the entire stay. The bathrooms are well equipped. Every room also has a wood stove that convinced me that I must come back at least once at Cund during the winter. The terrace has wicker furniture and is perfect for a few minutes of relaxation. The rental price of these apartments varies from 55 to 80 euros per night (for 2 to 3 people).
The alleys of the complex are paved, and the rose bushes bordered a good part of them. I was glad they did not use concrete or asphalt for alleys and they kept as much of the green space.
In the living area of the apartments there is the restaurant, which is extremely intimate in the interior, with a space that reminds me of the Lech area in Austria. As we reached the Green Valley in summer, we preferred to spend the three days out on the terrace, although I saw myself standing in front of the fireplace on one of the leather chairs, browsing a travel magazine. The restaurant is one of the price points of the resort, the owners are passionate about gastronomy. Besides, if you have read and you've forgotten your book, you find inside the restaurant a rich collection of renowned gastronomy books, I have recognized Julia Child's.
And in the restaurant the furniture is simple, wooden and water comes to your table in a glass carafe. The meals start with a trio of butter: plain butter, butter with chives and truffle butter, all in the area, which go well with buns made in the house. At dinner there are three kinds of food, besides this amuse-bouche. The menu is standard for all guests and changes every night. I tried a pumpkin soup with parmesan biscuits and a gaspacho. The main thing was my pork steak in red wine sauce, very well cooked and very tender. In the desert I tried a raspberry mash with mint and prosecco and pancottta, both delicious. The menu is unique and the dinner price is 20€.
Jonas, the owner, you can not meet him, he's always there, along with clients, but always through the kitchen. Jonas told me that if he were to recommend a single type of food, specific to the Green Valley, it would be pasta with butter sauce and truffles. I tried it for lunch and it really is crazy. Lunch includes two kinds of food and costs 44€.
In the morning, at breakfast, there is a traditional sausage and cheese buffet, vegetables in the garden, Ulrike house jam and pancakes as their grandmother does. You must also try Benedict with truffles and you can not want a better start of the day. Each of the above assortments has its own story, for example butter and yogurt, and I learned that they were made in the village, by a former employee of theirs.
Although you can explore the village, visit the fortified churches in the area or visit Sighisoara, my advice is to stay in the resort for at least a whole day, enjoy the tranquility of the garden, relax on the lounge and the small pond or better to the "natural pool". We were lucky to catch a night with falling stars ... quiet, nature, good taste and ... falling stars.
Depending on the season, Jonas and Ulrike are preparing a number of exciting activities. For example, for the autumn they prepared weekends looking truffles in the nearby forests.
The beautiful part of the Green Valley is that you find all the details of the resort, from the decorations on the tables (when we were we had thistles and all sorts of summer plants in small glass bowls) to the carefully selected music (Jonas has a record label in Germany), the delicious menu or the interior design of the apartments. And, very importantly, in the Green Valley you can find a signal on the phone, but also the internet that works well. Nowhere else through the village you will not have a good signal on the phone.
If you want more privacy, Jonas and Ulrike have renovated some Saxon houses in the village where you can stay. Prices are varied, depending on the capacity of the houses. Although they are Germans and speak in English (I know a few words in Romanian), locals seem to love them, especially because for more than 20 of them offered jobs, but there are others who help them . I also own my own carpentry shop in the village. A village in which, thanks to them, other boarding houses start to appear, and where they become directors of companies and important people from Romania and abroad.
A story of success, passionately written about what I do and a lot of love for tourism.
Thanks for visit 😊
