Saint-Émilion

The history of the city Saint-Émilion starts in the prehistoric area. The whole city has still many narrow streets, old churches and many ruins.

The name of the town was given by the Benedictine monk Émilion, a travelling confessor in the 8th century.

Nice old shops

Walking the streets of Saint-Émilion is a big fun. I went from nice restaurants to wine shops and some other old style selling places.

Wine made by Romans

The vineyards where planted by the romans in that time. Seems that some buildings are from
The same time. This belongs to a winery but the old roof is gone.

You probably never see so many wine shops on such a small area.

More shopping

The monks did it

As well the monks started up the commercial wine production in the area. Today wine is the biggest business in the area.

Great wine

Saint-Émilion belongs to the principal red wine areas of Bordeaux. There are as well Pomerol, Graves and Medoc in the neighborhood.
