Following traces of former greatness

in #travel8 years ago

My first post here. I'd like to tell you about my travel to abandoned military ground.

Dretun Military Ground - one of the largest military training grounds of the former Soviet Union. It is located in the north of Belarus, on the border with Russia. It is also not far to the border with Latvia. Convenient location contributed to the fact that the military ground is actively used by the Armed Forces of the USSR. It trained troops of the Warsaw Pact confronted NATO in the years. It is dozens of square kilometers of roads, communication lines, command posts, equipped firing point, places of deployment of troops during a training exercise, and service units at the usual time, a platform for helicopters and their flight control centers. This military ground has been invested hundreds of millions of dollars in today's prices. The culmination of the life of the landfill have been exercises "West-80" - one of the largest in those days. The exercises were accompanied by the landing of troops and some casualties, which of course were classified .Then USSR collapsed and this huge military ground did not need by little Belarus. And only ruins remind of the past greatness and the threat to the West and NATO

Currently, this ground is a favorite spot for mushroom berries pickers, and fans of extreme tourism. The ruins of the former military facilities could be the background for the filming of Apocalypse movie, until the military ground has not carried off by local residents, dismantled for building materials.
