[7 minute video] Why We Crave Adventure Even When it Means Pain and Hardship: a Story About Summiting a Mountain

in #travel7 years ago

I was climbing a mountain, muscles aching, sucking in air and never getting enough. Why am I doing this, I wondered. This isn't fun. What's the point?

A few days ago I wrote a story about climbing Southeast Asia's highest volcano, and told it as a sort of essay exploring these questions. I decided I wanted to take it further so I modified that piece into a script and dug up my old footage from the trek to make this video.

I felt I really needed to say everything I say in the video, but if you think it's too long I'd really appreciate your feedback. I'm trying to go beyond just cutting beautiful scenery and drone shots to cool music, and start telling richer stories, but I'm just starting out.

Thanks for watching!

Shot on GoPro 3 and 4, iPhone 5 and 6, and a few shots on a cheap DSLR. Edited in Final Cut X

You wonder why you do it, then promise not to do it again then you do it again after a few weeks. And the cycle goes on and on. I thought that I would stop watching your video after 2 minutes but I finished it until the end. Great job, I enjoyed watching it.

Yeah that sounds pretty familiar. Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching and especially for your feedback. It is much appreciated

Hello @dispatches , watched the whole clip throu. This is it! Well composed video and a very good begin. Actual adventures and the will to convey them is a great base for good development.
To me as an adventure rider, this place promises definitely many stories.

Congrats on the summit man. There's no adventure without a little hardship

Thanks, totally agree. If I wanted a walk in the park I'd go for one

Yeah - Exactly....We all have the option to live a "Choose your Adventure" type of life. And let us choose as we feel fit :)

Best video you've made - nice one.

Thank you. Maybe you can do voiceover on the next one :D In America they always use voice talent from England when they want something that sounds smart or sophisticated

Your experience came across very well in this video, I enjoyed it and can relate to it with my dabbling in that world of climbing and trekking when I was in my 20's. The challenge of the climb, the sense of accomplishment which can only be experienced by taking the challenge on leaves a lifetime impression of the experience. It's earned with every drop of pain. It was good to see shots of the drive up there, some of the background , for such a short film it was well made. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks a lot for watching and for the kind words. This coming week I have a rock climbing trip coming up. Just getting over my fear of heights now in my 33rd year of life. Should have a post on that soon
