Travel is amazing and coming across the Venetian fortress at Chania in Crete was nothing less than spectacular! Walking around the city searching for cheap alcohol and a good spot to go to the beach we came across a fortress built as the last refuge to defend against the ottomans!
Me and my two companions were on deployment moored in Beautiful Suda Bay where we woke up to snow capped mountains and bright blue water. Coming across the fortress we climbed it. We came across some locals who shared some smokes and drinks with us.
An abandoned UNESCO heritage site the Firka Fortress was built in the 1500s to defend the south side of the bay as a part of a series of fortifications in the area. It is now crumbling but you can still feel the history behind it and feel as though you are defending against the Turk's!
I took a brick that was laying on the ground which to this day is one of my favorite souvenirs!
This is definitely a place everyone should go!
