Tuz Golu or Salt Lake in english, is one of the most underrated lakes in the world. Tuz Golu is the second largest lake in the Republic of Turkey.
The Salt Lake has a length of 50 miles (80 km) and a width of 31 miles (50 km). But most importantly, it is extraordinarily shallow with an average depth of 2 feet (0.5 m). If you wanted to, you could walk across the lake... However, I wasn't courageous enough to walk for more than 15 minutes.
.
The lake has a salinity of 32.9%- now that is one salty lake! To put this into perspective the Salt Lake in Utah fluctuates 5 to 27% in salinity and the Dead Sea in Jordan is around 34% salinity.
During my time there, I even found some puppies enjoying the lake amongst the tourists.
I must admit that walking on top of a layer of salt does take its toll on your feet after walking for several minutes. Thankfully I didn't, but if you had a cut I could easily imagine the excruciating pain that would come from walking in salty water.
The Salt Lake of Turkey is located about a one hour drive south of the Turkish capital city of Ankara. If you ever find yourself the vicinity, I highly recommend seeing it. The large expanse of shallow water makes for a giant mirror effect- it is simply an amazing location to take photos!
