The beautiful Edinburgh Castle

I have a huge love for castles! Who knows? Maybe that has something to do with a previous life of mine. Castles are always located on the best position of the town -for strategical reasons but the view is astonishing from up there. When I visited Edinburgh the first thing I did was going to the Edinburgh Castle.

This historic fortress stands at the head of old town. As one of the most important strongholds in the Kingdom of Scotland, Edinburgh Castle was involved in many historical conflicts from the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 14th century to the Jacobite rising of 1745.

The Scott Monument.A Victorian Gothic monument to Scottish author Sir Walter Scott. (Looks like a Lord of the Rings tower!)

Back on the hill you can see (can you?) the National Monument of Scotland which is modelled upon the Parthenon in Athens.

Now back at the castle

We were lucky enough to see the firing of the One o'clock Gun!

The firing of the One o’clock Gun dates back to 1861 when it allowed ships in the Firth of Forth to set the maritime clocks they needed to navigate the world’s oceans. The idea was brought to Edinburgh from Paris by businessman John Hewitt.

I'd love to visit Scotland one day

It is a beautiful place! One of my favourite destinations!! :))

Who doesn’t like castles!? And acting silly.

Nice view photo two and thirteen. Nice stonework photo six, eight (statue is cool too) and ten (plus the woodwork and knight armor).

Interesting that the national monument of Scotland was modeled after the Parthenon, I wasn’t aware of that and wouldn’t have expected it.

Thank you so much @hrissm!! :))

I wouldn't have expected it either and I was surprised when they told us so at the tour.. The greek influence is greater than we think I guess :)
