Arta is the capital of the homonymous prefecture, and it is of historical significance because of the bridge it is located on the Arachthos River. According to History, the Turks wanted to make at 1602 bridge for their army to pass and have given the construction to the locals. When the Greeks learned of the purpose of its construction, each night they cut the bridge. So every day the bridge was built and every night was jamming. This was done for about 3 years until at the end and according to the legend of the bridge, the Masterbuilder was forced to sacrifice his wife, whom he buried at the foundations of the bridge. There is also a similar Greek folk song.
<<45 μάστοροι και εξήντα μαθητάδες
3 χρόνους εδουλεύανε στης Αρτας το γιοφύρι.
Ολημερίς το χτίζανε , την νύχτα γκρεμιζόταν....>>
<<45 craftsmen and sixty students
Three years they were running the bridge in Arta.
They were building it all night, and it was collapsing...>>
Expression (Like Arta's bridge, all-day building it was collapsing in the night) is still used today for something that is very late to become.
