A Sweet Exotic Fruit Of The World’s Deserts
The Prickly Pear Cactus of the desert is a delicious exotic fruit found throughout the world. They are harvested each summer and sold in the open markets that are almost everywhere. The Prickly Pear Cactus is an important fruit to the poor throughout most of the world. Perhaps, this is one of the cheapest summer fruits available in the market place.
Throughout much of the world, this Prickly Pear Cactus is a symbol of patience and perseverance. This is a favored food of the camel and other animals who uses patience and skill to avoid the sharp quills of the fruit as they eat. The Prickly Pear Cactus only survives in hot and dry desert climates, which usually have droughts most of the year. Due to their stalks that are filled with water, this plant can survive any drought.
The Cactus Pear, as it is often called, makes excellent juices which are high in antioxidants, delicious jams and candies, and of course, smoothies. Cactus pears are extremely rich in many vitamins and minerals. Many believe the cactus is a major help when trying to loose weight. Many doctors use it as a medicine for type 2 diabetes, obesity, and high cholesterol. It's high water content make it excellent for diarrhea, colitis, and even hangovers. The Cactus Pear is considered to be antiviral and it is believed to have anti-inflammatory properties.
Commercially, it is used to make a fantastic styling gel for one's hair. At this time, this is mostly made in small cottage type industries and sold in the open markets of Asia, Africa, and The Middle East. The Cactus Pear is one of those fruits that every part of the plant is used, thus it is one of the most valuable fruits of the desert.
When traveling throughout the world, you will find many varieties of the Prickly Pear Cactus and each one has it's own flavor and uses. As you visit the market place, make sure you take time to taste the many different types, and make note of the many different flavors and tastes. Which one do you like best?
