The Path Leading To The Eastern Gate In Jerusalem Israel

The Eastern Gate In The Wall Surrounding The Old City Of Jerusalem

The Old City Of Jerusalem is surrounded by a high wall with 8 gates. Many of these gates are not being used, but only the Eastern Gate is sealed off, and has been for the last 500 years. This gate faces the Mount of Olives, and is the oldest of the gates. The path leading up to the Eastern Gate is shown in the above picture. This is the path that John records Jesus using in John 12.

 John 12:13

They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, "Hosanna!" "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Blessed is the king of Israel!"

Many Christians know this day as Palm Sunday.  This day also is the beginning of Holy Week and is the historical day known to Christians that Jesus returned to the Old City and was greeted on this path with palms and praises to their King. It is always celebrated one week before Easter Sunday.

If you are looking for the perfect time to be in the Old City, this is one of times of the year that is a real blessing to be in Israel for Christians. Many pilgrims come during this week each year to begin Holy Week with this first day of celebration and ending on Easter Sunday.
