Architectural Beauty At St. Antonia's Meisjesschool In Amsterdam

The schools built in the 1900's were distinctly elaborate, but simple in design. St. Antonia's Meisjesschool in Amsterdam, is a perfect example of this simple but sober style. The building housed a girls school and it was important at the time that all buildings were built to keep expenses as low as possible for the working class. Notice the ornamental brink, the decorative shutters on simple windows and doors. This is a style of creative simplicity. 

 The  Westerkerk Church and  Bell Tower   

The Westerkerk Church and Bell Tower was built in the 1600's.  Here you see the simple lines with elaborate windows, rails, bell tower, and spire.  It was a common practice to have clock towers on the outside of churches and schools.  The simplicity of style, both sober and elegant, can be seen in the architecture of the 1600's also. 

 The Astoria Is A Jugendstil Style Building In Old Amsterdam

The Astoria was built in the early 1900's in the Jugendstil style. Like the previous two building styles, this is elaborate, yet simple. Notice the clock, that is common to all three of these styles, the elegant windows, spirals,  and the round decorative tower at the top. 

If you have never wandered the Old City of Amsterdam and compared the different types of designs throughout, then be sure to take a day and just study the architecture. Notice the differences and the similarities of the different periods. Clocks, spirals, round towers, decorative bricks, and interesting windows seem to be a common thread.  Yet, it is always done in a sober simplicity that is beautiful. So on your next trip to this tiny nation, take time for an architectural adventure, where the past and the present seem to join hands.  The Kingdom of the Netherlands is architectural adventure waiting to happen.

I've been recently to Amsterdam and I remember well this beautiful church =)
I loved so much some of the houses along the canals
They looked like straight from a movie
The city itself is absolutely phenomenal =)

Pick an area and be creative, using your own pictures and ideas. Let at least 3 hours pass between posts. Go to an area you like, such as facts, and follow the people there, many in turn will follow you. It takes time to grow, but you will grow slowly if you post YOUR work daily and follow others.
