Unusual Beauty From The Rainforest Of The Philippines
The Areca Nut must be one of the most unusual and spectacular plants in the tropical rainforest. The fruit of this palm is generally called the Betel Nut. This sometimes causes confusion with the Betel Leaves, which are used to wrap the Areca Nut in. Confusion can also be serious, as the nut is generally chewed like chewing tobacco by millions world wide and can cause several types of cancer. Regular users of Betel leaf and Areca nut as chewing tobacco, have a much higher risk of many serious diseases, with Mouth and Esophagus Cancer being two major ones.
This natural chew, with or without a tobacco leaf added is very popular throughout parts of Pakistan and India and throughout all of Asia and much of Africa. In Britain and The United States it is often sold in Asian Markets and is legal to sell.
The correct Betel Leaf is often used for cough and respiratory problems. It can bring quick relief for people who suffer from chest congestion and asthma. It is used externally only, warming the leaf and adding mustard oil. Then placing on the chest. Like with all medical uses of plants, consult your doctor first!
So as you discover these extraordinary Palms, remember that just because they are uniquely beautiful, does not mean that they should be consumed in any form. Some are for external use, and all are beautiful to the eye. Enjoy the beauty of nature, and refrain from chewing or eating what you do not know.
There are many jungle treks where you will see many unusual fruits, nuts, and other plants. These are perfect opportunities for a photography adventure. Unless you are given the go-a-head from a competent medical professional, do not eat or use what you do not know. Rather, this is the perfect opportunity for some one of a kind photos that will allow you to spend years remembering your jungle adventure.

Wish we had one in Ghana. Looks a bit scary though.
when we were kids, we used to play with that. we use it as bullets for our "sumpit."
@avon.grace from Kryptonia
Wow @avon.grace. What an amazing imagination.
Yeah sir @exploretraveler! It's kinda funny. When we were kids, we don't care whether it's clean or dirty. We just grab a handful of those nuts and put it in our mouths. We blow through a drinking straw using it as the bullet, aiming at our enemies. Hahaha!
wow! beautiful... following :)
Thanks @jriel.

Interesting, so the betel leaf is chewing tabaco? Do you partake in the chewing of the betel leaf? :)
No, our team does not partake, just an interesting history for a beautiful tree @ohboy.
I like this amazing Photography nature
Thanks @richardalom.
It is true that something we do not know should not immediately be considered useful. many people who do not know chewing betel nut together with betel leaves regularly can cause oral cancer. I am very happy to read your post .. thanks for the information ..
