The Devils Pulpit - Scotland

in #travel8 years ago

A couple hours northwest of Edinburgh (and about an hours drive north of Glasgow) there is a place called Finnich Glen. Its essentially a bunch of fields, a couple farms and country roads surrounded by trees on either side. However, nearby a river flows, completely surround by trees and hidden from the road. If you don't know its there, you won't ever find it.

What is so special about the area is that this river has carved a gorge through the landscape and because of the particular qualities of the stone, the water becomes a blood red colour. Because of this the gorge has been called the Devil's Pulpit and is well known for being picturesque as hell. So much so that it was used as a set for the big fight scene at the end of the movie 'The Eagle' starring Channing Tatum.

Getting there is tricky and requires at the very least, good walking shoes. You have to climb over a stone wall, follow a path through the trees and then climb down some very muddy and slippery steps carved into the stone with nothing but a rather flimsy rope to hold onto.

Oh and climbing down is very steep and it gets narrow.. very narrow as you can see in the above picture, but the narrowness only lasts a short time.

20160716-IMG_4106.jpgthe climb back up looks a little more forgiving - its not

Once you get to the bottom though you will be glad you made the effort because it is a magical place.

By the end of my stay I was desperately looking for more things to photograph because I just didn't want to leave (or face climbing back up), but there was nothing left to photograph and it was starting to rain. So I bit the bullet and headed back to the car for the long drive back home.

Equipment used:

  • Tripod (Giottos Vitruvian)
  • Canon 5d mkii
  • 17 - 40mm L f/4
  • 10-stop filter
  • circular polariser
  • remote trigger

Thanks

Thank you for taking the time to read my post. Please feel free to comment and upvote. I am always grateful for feedback and constructive criticism. I'm still very new to @steemit and am still finding my feet. Did you like the photos? Are they a good size, or too big to see on the screen properly? Are the captions under some images to small to read? Do you have any questions for me?

Great and very interesting post. Amazing photographs and a must see place.

Thanks! Yes, its a must see, I highly recommend it if you get the chance :)

wow! That was worth the climb down and back out again.

if I'm ever in the UK again I'm definitely going there for a visit.

Do it! It's worth it if you have the time. :)

It's So pretty , beautiful pictures.

This looks incredibly mysterious, peaceful and dramatic too. Love that blood red water. We have something a tiny bit similar in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey but the water appears more tea colored than the sharp blood red colors. Jersey Devil versus Devil's Pulpit I guess ;)

Sounds awesome! I would love to see it. I'm no geologist but it all comes down to what kind of minerals are found in the bedrock... the world is a random and beautiful place :)

amazing photos! Great equipment you got :) can't wait to see more!

thanks! I appreciate it :)

Wow, beautiful...doesn't look real almost.

i know right? its crazy :)

excellent pics of this beautiful place
those long exposures are perfect for this setting

Thanks! Yes, its a great location for long exposures. you cant go wrong there! :)
