I do not know if it's the fact of witnessing the first moments of the day that makes it so magical, but there is something touching about a sunrise. So close, but at the same time so different from a bedtime. We got up at chick hour (3 am in the morning) to get to the top of the Haleakala crater in time, say hello to the sun. 10,000 meters altitude, climbed into a car ride of only 45 minutes, we had to stop a few times to get used to quietly (read: and do not eat our little yogurt). With a pharmacist and a guide of adventure tourism in the car, let me tell you that you have reinforcement if you do not feel. Arrived at the summit, the sunrise is done slowly, on a rather unreal volcanic landscape. At the top of the clouds, the show is e-pous-tou-flant. We stayed in silence to welcome this new day by immersing ourselves in all the beauty of the world. I took some pictures, but not so much because I was too busy enjoying the moment. I admit it, I meditated.
I recommend leaving really early (3h30-4h max) because there is still traffic, there is only one road to get there and it is very busy (tourist bus you know). It would be flat to be still driving when the sun comes up. And dress warmly, because it's very cold at this altitude and this hour. There were people who brought a picnic lunch and I was really jealous, so that's a think of it. While you're there, bring some sparkling orange juice and say hello to the sun in style.
