Hello dear blog readers,

on the fourth day of my tour through Northern Cyprus we headed in direction Kyrenia. The day started with a great sunrise and the rich breakfast buffet of the Kaya Artemis Hotel again.

Then we went with packed baggage to the next destinations of the day by bus.

The first destination was the monastery of St. Barnabas.

Barnabas was an apostle, a martyr and is revered as a Cypriot national saint. Barnabas belonged to the Israeli Levite tribe, but came from Cyprus. He is not one of the 12 apostles, but is mentioned several times in the Bible and is said to have been among the disciples of Jesus. Barnabas is said to have preached in Rome, served as bishop in Milan, and baptized Clement of Rome. According to the book of Acts of Luke, he is said to have been a member of the first Christian community in Jerusalem.

The apostle Barnabas was one of the most important early Christian missionaries, came back with Apostle Paulus to his native Cyprus, became the first bishop of the island and died a martyr's death around 61 AD. His body was hidden because the people who killed him didn´t want to honor him, but the corpse was kidnapped by Markus Johannes later and buried in a stone cave.

The St. Barnabas Monastery is located about two kilometers west of the ancient city of Salamis and the complex includes the Monastery Church, the monastery building, with the Museum of Icons and Archeology and the funerary church of Saint Barnabas.

The artifacts in the archaeological museum are mainly numerous extraordinary ceramics of the Bronze Age from Enkomi (about 7000 to 1000 BC) and salamis. Many artifacts have also been brought to the Cyprus Museum in Nicosia and the British Museum in London.

The artefacts are very well preserved and many of these artifacts have still not been excavated.

Here are a few of the many artifacts in the archaeological museum of St. Barnabas Monastery:
