Hello dear blog readers,
here is the third part of my travel review from the 4th day of my tour through Northern Cyprus.
After visiting the magnificent "Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque", we headed to the port of Famagusta, known for its well-preserved 15th and 16th century Venetian walls. The well-preserved city wall is over 3 km long and is today surrounded by a waterless ditch.
From the old city wall you have a great panoramic view over the harbor.
On the observation deck, a dog also calmly enjoyed the sun and did not let the tourists disturb them. I would call this real deep relaxation:
The so-called Gate Porta Del Mare includes an iron gate and the statue of a Venetian lion. It is one of two original main entrances to Famagusta and was built in Italian Renaissance style.
In the lower part of the archway is the notice that this has been built upon the order by the Venetian Commander Nicola Prioli in 1496.
Representations of lions were often placed at the entrances of castles, ports and bridges, symbolising Venetian power and wealth. These lions appear in two distinct forms. The first form, as exhibited in the photos above, is made of local limestone, extending its front paws firmly on the ground, indicating the Venetian domination on the land. The second form is carved on marble plaques, being St. Mark´s winged lion, and is depicted resting on the sea and holding St. Mark´s gospel under one paw, symbolising dominance over the seas.
Afterwards we had some free time in Famagusta, before we went to the next destination. To make sure that this article is not too long, I make a stop here again and tell you tomorrow how it went on day 4. Stay tuned!
Best regards and we hear us.
