Do you know what a hyperloop is? According to Wikipedia
A Hyperloop is a proposed mode of passenger and/or freight transportation, first used to describe an open-source vactrain design released by a joint team from Tesla and SpaceX. Drawing heavily from Robert Goddard's vactrain, a hyperloop comprises a sealed tube or system of tubes through which a pod may travel free of air resistance or friction conveying people or objects at high speed while being very efficient.
You may also be interested in Elon Musk's slight variation on the concept, which we also find if we read further on the same article about "hyperloop":
Elon Musk's version of the concept, first publicly mentioned in 2012,[2] incorporates reduced-pressure tubes in which pressurized capsules ride on air bearings driven by linear induction motors and air compressors.
If we want to put it in layman terms, the hyperloop is a tube, with no or very little air pressure. In this tube capsules are traveling at high speed because there is no friction with air or tracks. In the capsules and on stations, it is normal air pressure.
Now that you hopefully plunged with me directly into the subject, you may expect that I make my point. Although you probably guessed by now.
Yes, Elon Musk wants to build such a hyperloop tunnel between New York and Washington D.C. via The Boring Company (I wonder how they came up with this motivating name) and received the permit for preparation and preliminary excavation of a site in Washington D.C. This hyperloop tunnel between NYC and D.C. would eventually be one leg of a larger network.
The trip between the two cities currently takes more than 3 hours and using the hyperloop tunnel it would be down to a little less than 30 minutes, which would cut the traveling time by more than 6x.
Is this one more step for the underground transportation of the future? Looks like it.
