The Ancient Stromatolite Ocean Formed in shallow water by the trapping, cementation and binding of sedimentary grains by biofilms. These were among the first sources of oxygen on Earth. They developed throughout the planet's shallow waters about 3.5 billion years ago, but are also extremely rare today.
