Mae Jo Golf Course (Chiang Mai): Much nicer than expected

in #travel6 years ago

I played a lot of golf when I was a kid. I was actually quite good at it but then took a 20 year or so hiatus that began with fascination with Nintendo, and kinda stayed that way because golf is a very expensive sport with ludicrously pricey gear involved.

When I was living in the south of Thailand I couldn't imagine anyone wanting to play golf in this country because it is insanely hot here and for the most part the courses I had seen were in terrible shape because cultivating grass in a country that is a billion degrees all day, every day, requires a crap ton of water and even then it may not work.

Mae Jo Golf club (course) is quite near my house and I figured I would check it out yesterday. I gotta say, i was extremely impressed.

To be fair, I did not play the links. I am far too out of practice and didn't want to embarrass myself. However, they did let me tour the clubhouse and grounds. This place is super fancy and it may be a bit out of my league.

This place isn't just a world-class golf course, but it is also a super-fancy resort. To play 18 holes here is going to cost you around $100. This isn't terribly rare or surprising to anyone that plays golf regularly as most courses cost this much to play. This is likely too rich for my blood, especially since I don't currently own any clubs. Maybe I can play with a shovel and some pots and pans like Kevin Costner did in "Tin Cup" (great film by the way.)

For the time being there are 5 other golf courses in Chiang Mai and I am only just learning that this is a major part of the tourism up here. I can't speak for the greens, because I didn't play, but from an appearance point of view, Mae Jo looks wonderful and hopefully I will get my game up and be able to play here one day.
