Abandoned Quarry And Mountain

in #travel7 years ago

This Is Rummu quarry, it is located in Rummu obviously..., about 35 kilometers away from the capital Tallinn. The place was in use in the 80's and since from the start of the 90's it's been abandoned after a disaster happened there. Next to the quarry, there is a jail and this is abandoned as well.

This is the part of the quarry where the big hole was or still is. It's now underwater as you can see, this is the aftermath of the disaster. These photos are taken in the early March and it was winter at that time in Estonia so everything is covered with an ice sheet. At this certain spot, in the center, water is about 100meters deep, crazy right?

By now you probably want to know what happened to this place. I have heard 2 versions of what happened. I know its weird but I don't even find information on the internet what did exactly happen.
VERSION 1: In the hole, there were pumps that kept the groundwater away. At that time, scrap metal was very valuable and thieves came and stole the pumps in the night. Those pumps contained shitloads of metal and someone probably got a nice amount of money out of these. You can imagine what happened after the pumps were gone.

VERSION 2: Some worker made a horrible mistake and dug into the groundwater line, this resulted in quarry filling with water.

Whatever went wrong, this happened and you know whats really interesting. This whole quarry filled with just 35 hours.
There was no time to get the equipment out, it's all still there, lying at the bottom of the hole.

Next, to the hole, there are some nice cliffs. When there is no ice and you watch straight down you can see about 20 meters down. Water is that blue and transparent, you can even see one tree, still standing underwater. Quite scary I would say.

Now you know that the quarry drowned, that's not all. There is the whole village down there on the other side of the quarry, all underwater. Divers really enjoy this place. I have seen photos, there are roads, street lamps, benches, living houses, all there.

This house you can see in the water right here, this is the 3rd floor.

In the summer when there is no ice, you can see houses fully underwater from the top of the mountain.
Yes, the quarry has a mountain too where you can climb on. This gives you a great areal view of the surrounding areas, the quarry, jail, and everything.

Some random snow pattern I saw there. Seemed like I should take a photo.

You cant get the same effect from the photos, looks so much more amazing in real life.
When its summertime like right now, the view is different. Like I said you can see buildings underwater from the top of the mountain and clear blue water is an amazing sight on its own.
I will go back there in the near future and take new photos when there is open water, of course, I'm writing a new post of this when the time comes.

That's crazy with the vilage under water!!

Yup, strange to think this.

Maybe aliens came and inserted anal probes to the workers. I don't know why I like to think that happened, I just do.

Haha what the fuck :D

This looks so peaceful, nice colors

Yep it really is.
