Asbyrgi Canyon

in #travel6 years ago

Asbyrgi canyon is one of a kind place. It is located in northeast Iceland, you can pretty much locate it from the satellite photo because it's so clearly seen from above. There are no mountains surrounding this canyon, it's on the flat ground and makes it pretty special already. Not special enough? There is not many trees or underwoods on Iceland but this is different. All the area inside the canyon is covered with birch and willow trees.

This natural phenomenon measures approximately 3.5 kilometers (2.2 miles) in length and 1.1 kilometers (0.7 miles) in width. Walls of the canyon get roughly 100 meters high. It is believed that this place started to form about 8-10 million years ago due to catastrophic floodings in the area. These floodings likely occurred due to a volcanic eruption beneath the ice-cap, Vatnajökull glacier. The last flooding happened about 3000 years ago and this is how this place looks today.
Let's get to the photos!
