Quick Visit to Helsinki, Finland

in #travel3 years ago (edited)

Last Wednesday we had a quick trip to Helsinki, Finland. There was a concert we had to attend to, so since Helsinki is so close to us, we can do a one-day trip there. Ferry took us over the sea and we had about 4 hours to look around before the concert starts.
I figured that why not see some cultural buildings and walk along the city. Of course, there really isn't anything new to me because I have been to Helsinki 5 times at least before. Still, it's fun to see a change of scenery.

All the photos are taken with a phone because I didn't take my camera. I wasn't sure if I can take it with me to the concert.
I used a 46megapixel mode so these phone photos aren't that bad actually.

Yeah, electric scooters are a big thing there as well. There were scooters everywhere piled up in the streets. In some places literally piled up like trash. The funny thing is that no one is riding them, I think I only saw two people riding there during my time.

Houses in the city center are beautiful, with great architecture.

By the way, I noticed that Finnish flags were out everywhere almost every building had one. If anyone from Finland reads this then please tell me if 27th April is some national holiday or if flags everywhere are a regular sight?

Since we still had time left, I found a small peninsula on the maps and decided to check it out. Its called Tervasaaren Koirapuisto.
There were some playgrounds and a small sandy beach. I guess some use it for swimming in the summer.

There were some birds too and I am not sure that I am familiar with those birds. Estonia and Finland's south coast are so close but different bird species roam the area.
They were also used to people walking by, they weren't scared at all when I approached.

One more church we passed by on our walk to the concert location.

We went to see British indie/post-punk rock artist White Lies. I love the music they make and since Estonia was not included in their new album tour we had to go to Finland. One bad shot from there too. this event took place in a location called Kultuuritalo. It's a house of culture, I don't need translation to know what this is because in Estonian the same name is Kultuuritalu.

What we did not know was that there was also a warm-up artist and this screwed up our tickets back to Estonia, we missed our ferry because of that. Had to buy new tickets for the last ferry that departed, we barely made it, we were the last ones to board the ship. Already started thinking that we need to spend a night in a hotel and leave early in the morning cause we both have workdays tomorrow.

Also, I learned that word matkalle in Finnish means going on a travel. For some reason, I lol-ed hard. Matkale in Estonian means going on a hike. Going on travel in Estonian is something totally different "reisile minema" if anyone wants to know.

Anyway, it was a cool/fun short day trip to Finland!
