From home to Greymouth we'd been driving my trusty 2002 BMW 3 hatchback. But it was train time now; one of Kyle's most anticipated adventures.
Greymouth
The train from Greymouth to Christchurch takes us through Arthur's Pass. The air was freezing, and the only respite we had was finding a strip of train-station concrete that sheltered me from the wind but had full access to the sun.
Personally, this part of the trip was difficult for me, since Kyle and I hadn't had much time to ourselves so far throughout the trip and it was taking it's toll. I was in a irritable mood for the first half of the trip which wasn't helped by the cold weather. Luckily, spending long periods of time looking out the window with earphones in was a socially acceptable thing to do on a train. So that's what I did.
Arthur's Pass
Arthur's Pass is sparse, and it's main export is tourists (please laugh, I thought that was funny). There are approximately 25 people living in Arthur's Pass, so I guess that means we outnumbered the population about 7 to 1.
Ironically, the picture above captured one of my favourite parts of the trip. Being annoyed at the world, it was only typical that God would give me a view like this. The long grass was whizzing past at quite a speed, and the mountain was barely moving at all. I hope that gives you an idea of how vast the landscape was. Being there in that moment was the epitome of freedom. I let the cold air blast through my hair, messing it up fantastically, and just drank in the experience. Suddenly, I didn't have a care in the world.
Looks like it was a nice ride. Love the little joke about the main export for the town. I honestly giggled before I read that you said it was a joke. Sounds like you needed some fresh air. It's amazing how being outside and seeing the beauty around you can be so soothing. Glad it turned out to be a nice trip.

We left the car behind to pick it up again on our way back up the West Coast :D
In the meantime, we took a rental car around the rest of the South Island.
So many gorgeous photos, those sceneries are really astonishing. What a view!
