5 things to do in Utrecht to have an amazing day!

in #travel7 years ago

Usually, when people think about the Netherlands, they think about Amsterdam. Yes, Amsterdam should be on your Dutch destination list, but so does Utrecht. It is the forth largest city in the Netherlands with 300.000 inhabitants and lively, but cozy atmosphere.

Here are 5 things to do in Utrecht for a lovely day:

1. Have an Old Canal boat trip
The canals of Utrecht have something special that no other city canals have: the wharfs. When the sun is shining people sit on the wharf terraces and enjoy their drinks. But it is also a great pleasure to view the old canal (Oudegracht) from the water. The boat trip will take 1 hour (€11). Feeling more active? You could rent a waterbike for 1,5h (€10) to explore the city by the Old Canal. After this you will be ready to have a Dom Tower climb.

2. Climb the Dom Tower
The Dom Tower is the highest church tower in the Netherlands. You will have to take 456 steps to climb the 112 meters of heights to enjoy the magnificent view. After the climb, you could have a look at the Dom Church and its garden as well, or you could pass that and have a drink at Neude. Price for the Dom Tower tour is €9.

3. Have a drink at Neude
Just sit and watch the people move around you, while having a drink. After this relaxation, you will be ready to visit Rietveld Schrödeqrhuis.

4. Visit Rietveld Schröderhuis
Gerrit Rietveld designed this special house in 1924 for his friend Truus Schröder-Schräder. It is based on the ideas of “De Stijl”. The house consists mainly of rectangular and square shapes. In the interior you will find tight lines and primary colors: red, blue and yellow. There are flexible walls in the house to redecorate the space very easily. When you visit the house, you will be stunned by clever division of surfaces inside the house. The fee to visit Rietveld Schröderhuis is €15. After this you will be ready to have a tasty dinner.

5. Have a dinner in the Drieharingstraat
In this little street there are 7 different restaurants. You can choose between sushi, burgers, tapas, French, Italian and International cuisine. These restaurants are a good alternative for the more touristic Old Canal restaurants. The parallel street of the Drieharingstraat - De Zakkendragerssteeg – could also be recommended.

Hey, it is OK if you just stayed at Neude and did not continue to the points number 4 and 5 ;)

I bet you will come back to Utrecht anyway!
