The city of Chefchaouen, the capital of the province, was founded in 1471 by Ali bin Rashid, to house the Muslims of Andalusia after being expelled by the Spaniards Where as a fortress for the Mujahideen against colonialism. The city alone includes 35,709 people (2004 census)
