Should You Pack Light To Solve Your Plight?

When I was a girl, I enjoyed reading of adventures. Tales such as The Jabberwocky, Alice in Wonderland, and also fairy tales.

In these stories, people always seemed to be traveling. Today I want to help you prepare for your travels.

In Part 1, I will discuss packing light and packing right !

PACKING LIGHT: VIDEOS FOR YOU

There are 3 helpful videos I shall list in case you want to check them out. One is "packing light for men" and of course the other is "packing light for women". I chose 2 videos on packing for women.

First one is "How to Pack Light for Women with a Rolling Suitcase"; it includes what you should wear on the plane, and tips for organizing so you won't have to check any bags. Airline guidelines are considered.

In 2nd video (for ladies), you'll watch Sarah Murdoch's "Packing Light & Right with Sarah". It's very thorough at 1 Hour 9 minutes.

TIP: Just commit to watching the first 7 minutes of 'Packing Light & Right with Sarah Murdoch', and SEE if you don't learn some super-valuable tips for packing light.

If you want to save time & avoid wasting time checking your bags, then you'll want to view the video called "HOW TO PACK LIKE A PRO" by Alex Costa; he shows you Ways to SAVE TIME (including a hack involving your Cell phone).

You can find these resources at the conclusion of my post

Packing Light: Do I Owe It To Myself to Pack For Efficiency?

I would jokingly like to say I've never had anything removed from my carry-on, yet that would be a fib. It was rather embarrasing; not as much as farting on the plane, but enough to make me mend my ways. In an effort to help you avoid any hassles, I am providing some insightful tips & tricks and also resources.

If you glanced inside the luggage of people who go on vacation, you could be quite surprised. It’s astonishing what people feel they can’t live without when travelling.

Okay, maybe you’re not one of those people who packs everything including the kitchen sink, but here are some packing tips that you might not have thought about yet.

Okay, you may have common sense and realize that you should only bring things that are absolutely necessary; things that you can secure at your destination should not be duplicated. You’re on the right track.

But here’s a few more items which you likely have not considered:

Pack clothing items that you’re ready to give to charity. Wear them and then leave them behind after you’ve worn them one last time.

NOTE: If your destination is a developing country, locals will probably be very happy to get your used clothing.

If you have underwear that has seen better days, take those personal items on your trip and throw each item out after wearing or at the end of your trip.

Choose clothing that can do double duty. For example, simple black pants are more versatile than blue jeans because they can be dressed up or down.

In that same vein, layer two or three thin items instead of wearing one heavy sweater. Not only will you be warmer with layers, but you can take off a layer if you end up being too warm.

If your airline still allows one carry-on bag plus a purse or backpack, your main carry-on should be the 4-wheeled type. They are far easier to push around than the 2-wheeled variety.

(and the personal item should be something that can be attached to the wheeled carry-on with a travel bag bungee strap)

Put a brightly-colored pompom or a colorful strap on your checked bag to make it easy to recognize on the baggage carousel. In addition, the pompom will make it less likely that someone else will take it by mistake.

Ziploc plastic bags are great for packing absolutely everything – clothing, cosmetics, charging cables, and more. And take along extra plastic bags for items that you might buy as you travel.

Ziploc bags are particularly important for shoes that get dirtier than everything else.

If you’re going to a developing country, plan to have laundry done for you. The charge is generally very reasonable. That means you can take even fewer pieces of clothing.

A clever way to make it easy to see all your packed items at once is to use a home-made divider.

Here’s how to do it :

Buy a piece of plastic poster board larger than your suitcase. Then, cut it to be the same shape and size as the interior of your suitcase. Make cutouts large enough for your hands on either side. Pack some of your items in the empty suitcase. Then, place the poster board on top of those items and pack everything else.

When you’re at your hotel, you can take out the poster board with the items on top of it and set it somewhere convenient. Voilà! You can now see just about everything at once.

Put identification inside your suitcase. Don’t trust that the identification you have on the outside of your suitcase will be safely attached, once it has bounced against other luggage making the same trip.

In addition, paste your business card on the inside -- or staple it to an interior pocket. For additional protection, write your identification information in PERMANENT black marker on the inside.

Consider using a vacuum-seal bag to “shrink” your socks and underwear down, if your trip is going to be longer.

Pack some hand sanitizer (one for your purse and one for your suitcase), as airports are notorious for germs.

IMPORTANT: Use a scale to weigh each item destined for yr Carry-on bag. Write the weight on each item, using a sharpie pen .

Find the RIGHT Luggage. Check the specific limitations for each airline – they are all different. Be sure you remeasure your carryon bag or backpack, once you’ve packed it. The dimensions can change.

Adhere to TSA’s 3-1-1 Rule – This is regarding gels, liquids and aerosols. Specifically, the size of the quart Ziploc bag you’ll use (and Make sure that the bag is easy to access for Security ).

Choose the RIGHT Clothes – You may choose Patagonia pants, which have 4 Pockets – You can stuff a few toiletries in the pockets (to MEET your weight limit). PT: They won’t weigh you !

Don’t Hurry Your Packing. TIP: It’s best to do it deliberately and wisely. LAY everything out on your bed. Consider what’s BEST to leave behind. Have a friend analyze it and critique it.

Keep the carry-on organized. Things that are needed OFTEN should be placed in outside pockets.

LABEL or color-code items (for quick access)

Take Note of Toiletries provided at your Hotel. Omit these items.

PERSONAL ANECDOTE : A TRAVEL MISHAP

One of the most fun vacations I ever had was a trip to Hawaii. I was prepared for everything, except my dining experience - a Young man came flying through the window and LANDED right on my dinner table !

I calmly looked at him and said, "I didn't expect you for supper."

QUESTION: Does Anyone care to "share" a FUNNY Travel Moment, or MISHAP?

Great travel and packing information! I only do carryon for my travels after once having my luggage not meet me at my vacation destination about 20 years ago, and find it almost fun to get everything I need packed into that 22" rectangle live out of short-term!✈🎒🌎✈

Gee thanx. As for me, one time I had packed 2 very special tennis rackets & had them stolen.

Lesson learned ! Now, I do things differently

Since you mentioned theft, (I try so hard not to think about it because of the negative memories it conjures up) I had a similar experience at Miami International Airport. An exquisite, one-of-a-kind, beaded and sequined clutch given to me by my godmother was stolen from my suitcase. I even had a padlock on the suitcase!😠Where did your theft occur?
Lesson learned, indeed!

Hi. Mine was at Denver (the old Stapleton Airport). My fiancee and I were mortified to Lose 2 superior racquets.

It affected our #Tennis playing for a time. And I played a lot of 'interclub/League' tennis tournaments.

But I let that go.
I am sorry indeed that you lost a special memento that yr godmother had provided you, to keep forever.

Take care

Post packed (had to use that word hehe) full of useful advice. Thanks for sharing. Looks like I was right to follow you if your posts are all so interesting. Thank you for sharing :)
