Sliding Down Sandhills - Monahans, TX

in #travel7 years ago

Every once in a while we travel across Texas to film a wedding.

A wedding in Lubbock took us out west to check out the Monahans Sandhills State Park — which meant sliding down (and climbing! long sigh) hills (or mountains, depending on if you’re speaking from the top or bottom) of sand dunes!

See a map of the park here.

There are sand discs for rent at the visitor’s center, which are a definite must. There’s no point in hiking up to the top of the dunes if you’ve got to walk back down. Rent a disc and fly down instead! Disc rental is about $2 if I remember correctly. Totally worth it.

If there’s anything people know about Texas, it’s that it gets hot AF down here. One can guess how hot it gets out west in the Sandhills. We started with a picnic (on the map, near the Shin Oak Picnic area) and plenty of water, then drove down to the Pump Jack Picnic area and trekked through the dunes to find the highest point to slide down.

Our secluded picnic area

In just these few minutes we were parched. Walking uphill in sand combined with the struggle of going against the wind definitely warrants a camelback or at the very least a bottle of water, although the luxury of not having to carry anything in hand with the camelback is ideal.

Since hiking through the dunes can be exhausting, we were thrilled to have brought the drone to get the full ariel view.

Thanks! Those flowers were dreamy, dancing in the wind :)
