Abraham Lake
As winter temperatures in this Canadian Rocky Mountain lake fall below 30 Fahrenheit, methane gas from the decomposition of organic material at the bottom acquires an ethereal formation. For millions, bubbles flow and quickly freeze on ice. The result is an upper part of the frozen lake with constellations of glassy orbs suspended under the feet: a beautiful sight with an edge of danger, given the flammability of the gas. After the thaw, this vast sapphire lake is still impressive in summer.
Butte Castle
Saskatchewan
In Big Muddy Badlands there is a dramatic relic of the ice age: an impressive formation of sandstone and compressed clay rock that rises from the middle of the meadow. A century ago, the badlands were the northern end of the "Outlaw Trail," where famous bandits hid from US authorities in caves and used the 230-foot Butte Castle as an observation post.
