can tell you now riding a scooter around Cambodia is so much fun. So dangerous but also so exciting. After a few near misses riding back from the most amazing place Siem Reap to Phnom Penh . Wow now that’s a great place. You have to visit the Angkor Wat and surrounding ruins. I couldn’t get out of my head the two girls who helped me out when I had a flat tyre and the great food they showed me. I thought I will give them call and see what other food that might be true local food. This time they both couldn’t come as one of them was working but Sreyla was super keen. 10 minutes later Sreyla had picked me up and we are off to another great local food place. I can tell you now the girls in Cambodia are ridiculously good at riding motor bikes.
It was real hot night and the way the food was cooked made it worse. Our table had a fire pit stuck right in to the middle of our table with a char grill screen on top.
Man that made it even worse but I got over that once the food came out. Now the menu was in Khmer on English what so ever. I’m thinking”SWEET” . My Cambodian friend and now guide did the ordering. I had no idea what she was ordering but you know what I didn’t care. You only live once so go with it it say.
First of all someone brought out more coals for our fire bucket oven grill. Then our food arrived a mixture of meats, beef seafood heart and brain. Lots of hot and sweet sauces and loads of rice. Now this is another cook it yourself place.
My new friend Sreyla did most of the cooking I was mostly salivating in anticipation but in the end I got into the cooking myself.
Real simple throw the food on the grill fill up your bowl with rice and wait for the food to cook. The food is sliced thin so it doesn’t take long to cook. Then take it of the grill put some sauce on it and eat it with your rice.
Man so tasty so smoky so sweet plus the sauces and dips are divine. They are hot, spicy, sweet and tangy. I have had a lot of Khmer barbecue food around Siem Reap but it was all marinated and more western style but this was so different this was true Khmer barbecue food. Simple and smoky.
Another great social food. We sat around chatting and gossiping while the food cooked at our pace if you wanted more then you just threw it on the grill and what you didn’t cook you don’t pay for or you could pay and take it home. Man I love that. All the families around us where so engaged with each over. The air was filled with constant conversation.
So in the end it was another brilliant night in food nirvana thanks to my local friends and new family.
Thanks again Sreyla for a top night again.
Remember Keep smiling and don’t stop traveling it’s beautiful world out there.
