Mount Fuji, perhaps the most famous icon of Japan, is a UNESCO World Heritage site that is visited by million of visitors from every corner of the world every year.
Peaking at 3776 metres, Mount Fuji is Japan's tallest mountain and can be seen even from as far as Tokyo on a clear day. One of the best places to get a close up view is Lake Kawaguchiko. With direct trains and bus connections from Tokyo, it is one of the most accessible destination among the Fuji Five Lakes.
Lake Kawaguchiko is a well developed town that is filled with many Ryokans (Japanese hotels, typically comes with hot bath with natural spring water) and restaurants.
We planned for a 2 day 1 night stay at one of the Ryokan overlooking the lake with Mount Fuji as a backdrop.
Arriving at Kawaguchiko Station
From Tokyo, it is an easy 2 hours ride taking the JR Limited Express train followed by Fujikyu Railway to Kawaguchiko Station. We were greeted by a surprise at the station, a Thomas and Friends Train! Apparently, this was to promote the Thomas and Friends themepark in the nearby Fuji-Q Highlands (probably the BEST themepark in whole of Japan).
Lake Kawaguchiko and Mount Fuji
Our Ryokan was kind enough to send a shuttle to pick us up from the station, which was a 10 minutes drive away. The view of Lake Kawaguchiko and Mount Fuji was simply breathtaking.
From inside our room, we could see Mount Fuji out the window. We were so fortunate and blessed with a clear blue sky. For those who know, Mount Fuji is notoriously shy, one needs plenty of luck to get a clear view of it.
Activities
Kawaguchiko is pretty developed and there are activities around for visitors to enjoy. Enjoy the lake and explore the waters by taking out a paddle boat. Rent a bicycle to enjoy the scenery or simply stroll along the lake at your own leisure.
Photo taking time while enjoying the sunset, Mt Fuji, and Lake Kawaguchiko, what a combo.
Even the JR train station offers a great view of Mount Fuji
First time visitors to Japan, in particular Tokyo, would always plan for a visit to view Mount Fuji. Lake Kawaguchiko is definitely our recommended viewing spot of the majestic mountain.
