Geography of Odessa region: Lake Ialpug

in #travel7 years ago

Lake Yalpug is a unique estuary lake in Ukraine. It is not only the large size pond in the country of natural origin. Its value is nearly one hundred and fifty square kilometers, making Yalpug the second freshwater lake on the European continent. In addition, it to become one of the twenty lakes on the planet, which have an area exceeding 10,000 square kilometers.

Cahul is situated in the South-Western part of Odessa region on the territory of the districts of Bolgrad, Izmail and Reni. Officially I think that the name of the water basin went from Ialpug river, which flows into it. But there is another legend that named the lake so the settlers who founded on its shore the ancient city of Aprium.

The total length of the lake is 39 km wide, it is almost six kilometers. The average depth of the lake is about two meters, but there are places where it reaches up to five and a half. Has connections with the Danube river through lake Kugurlui. In the 1970s, in a narrow part of the connection with the latter, he built a dam and a bridge, where the paved route Izmail – Reni. After construction of the dam, many scientists talked about the rapid pollution of the lake. In addition, the water exchange between Alpaga and Kugurluy decreased almost threefold.

A large part of the basin located on the southern territory of Moldova, which is famous for its high level of cleaning. Often it was that the body of water is quite polluted with pesticides and various fertilizers. In the past this has repeatedly led to the "flowering" of water and even mass deaths of animals. But now the situation has become much better.

For the tourist Yalpug is one of the most attractive places in Ukraine. Thanks to a well developed flora and fauna, and the warm temperature for swimming and the beaches, here, you can create entire resorts, visiting his family for the weekend. The beauty of the lake is difficult to overstate, especially at sunset.

Almost every Ukrainian lake has its own legend, and Yalpug is no exception. In the coastal Park there is an old oak, which is carefully guarded by the local population. Rumor has it that in 1823, the year heading to Odessa, Alexander Pushkin will stop at the shores of the lake, in Bolgrad, in order to enjoy its beauty. And Yalpug he is so sunk into the soul, that he planted the oak.

As you know, to confirm the authenticity of this story from the local impossible. However, without legends, Yalpug is no less interesting and attractive place for tourists. With its beaches offer beautiful views, giving peace, and leading thoughts in order.
