Places to visit in Ireland #5: Hidden gems of Donegal ☘️

in #travel8 years ago (edited)

Hi Steemit friends!

Today I again want to take you to a trip around evergreen Ireland. The place I'm going to talk about is not the first you will be recommended to see but it's really worth to go there. Everybody will tell you that West of Ireland is the most beautiful but Donegal isn't less attractive at all. Donegal is a county on the North-West and the road to get there goes through Northern Ireland.

Note: Northern Ireland in part of the United Kingdom like Scotland, Whales and England. Yes, Northern Ireland with its capital in Belfast is a different country. Southern Ireland is called Republic of Ireland and its capital is in Dublin. Be careful with this two countries, people could be offended if you make a mistake.

When you get there you will see green land all around, bright blue sea and little cute cottages of local farmers. Horses and donkeys are still needed here for work on the land and it's high possibility to meet them on your way. I can't help myself to stop the car and take photos of these elegant animals.

The most common view you will see in Donegal is a bog. Miles and miles of bogland that accumulates peat (or turf). Ancient Irish used it for warming the house. Actually, they still do it in the countryside! I was renting an airbnb (great website!) that time so I could live as a local. In the evening time when the cold Atlantic wind was freezing all around, I had to sit in the living room putting more and more peat in the fire to stay warm. It was one of the cosiest evenings in my life!

When you go in Donegal you defenitely should go and see Ballymastocker Bay. It was once voted as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world! It's cold to swim even in the summer but I promise you absolutely stunning view from the top of the hill.

Not far away there is a stunning lighthouse at Fanad Head. There is an exciting story behind this place. In 1917 a British ship sank in here. It had 3211 gold bars on it ($410 million!) and 22 of them are still missing. Isn't it a good reason to come here and try to dive?

Even if you are not going to jump in the cold water, in Ireland there is always the option to find leprechaun's gold at the end of the rainbow ;)

The beach looks amazing! I would love to go there sometime :D

Absolutely stunning view there.

Horses, greenery, and beach...what a good combination

It's such a beautiful place but the wind is crazy there!

Beautiful shots. I stayed in a lighthouse in Donegal when I was a kid. I wonder if it was that one.

Cheers! I wouldn't say it was that one, it didn't look like you could stay there and it was only open to visitors at the weekend.

Great story and beautiful images. I'm dying to visit Ireland one day.

Great shots capturing the beauty of this area, I visited there twice i think and loved the area and the hospitality of the people i meet there,

That's the one thing I noticed, the hospitality is amazing.

Another great post, I really like that image of the horses. I've not been to Donegal yet. Although maybe I was there when I was much younger, I can't quite remember. I do have vague memories of being in a few Ulster counties when I was younger, Donegal could've been one of them.

Also, nothing beats an aul' turf fire.

What beautiful pictures of the Donegal area! I visited Ireland about 5 years ago and saw some of Shannon and Dublin and other areas in between. Ireland is a beautiful country with wonderful people!
