Brussels' neighbourhoods - Etterbeek

in #travel7 years ago

Hi fellow Steemians! I hope you are having a wonderful day today, filled with love and purpose!

I am back today with my series about Brussels' neighbourhoods. Brussels is a city that hides lots of surprises for the keen eye. Getting off the tourist path will definitely make you experience the real spirit of this unique and, sometimes quirky, city.

Today we will take a look at a very important neighbourhood: Etterbeek.

I would define this neighbourhood as the "second center" of the city, as it comprises the European Quarter and is home of a great number of Institutions located in the Belgian Capital. Let's take a loot at it then!

Etterbeek is home to the iconic Maison Antoine - by all accounts serving the best fries in Brussels - and of Philippe Geluck, creator of [The Cat](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Chat).

Very well connected to the City Center by buses and Metro, the neighbourhood is a typical Belgian one, with its characteristic "slim houses". Nonetheless, there is also a more modernized area comprising of recently built apartments European Officials and interns are able to rent. Various shops and boutiques have everything the Etterbeekoises need for their life.

People-wise, it is a mix of the most varied ethnicities. It is not rare to see Italians, greeks, vietnamese, thais and many more all together, especially during Sundays in the Place Jourdan market, drinking a beer or sampling their neighbours' specialties.

One of the main advantages of living in Etterbeek is - as mentioned before - its proximity to the EU institutions, making it close enough for professionals who do not want to waste time on Brussels' public transport (everyone knows it can be stressful at times) but still a good area to find cheap apartments for rent.

The neighbourhood is two steps away from the Parc du Cinquantenaire - home of lots of afternoon runners - and the Parc Leopold, as well as hiding a lovely garden, the Felix Hap, a well kept secret and an oasis of serenity in the middle of the neighbourhood.
