Visiting the Phu Khao Thong (Golden mount) in Bangkok, Thailand

in #travel8 years ago (edited)

Hello Steemians,

In this post, I will talk about the Phu Khao Thong (aka Golden mount) in Bangkok, Thailand. Phu Khao Thong is a steep artificial hill surmounted by a chedi inside the Wat Saket, a Buddhist temple complex (1).

"Thong" in Thai means metal that has a beautiful color, mostly referring to gold.

It all started when King Rama III decided to build a chedi (pagoda) of huge dimensions inside the Wat Saket complex. Unfortunately, the chedi collapsed during construction. Over the next few decades, the collapsed mud-and-brick structure was covered in moss, and acquired the shape of a natural hill.

During the reign of King Rama IV, construction began again of a chedi on the artificial hill, over the previous one. It was completed early in the reign of his son, King Rama V. A relic of the Buddha was also brought from Sri Lanka and placed in the chedi.

Phu Khao Thong is now a popular Bangkok tourist attraction, and has become one of the symbols of the city.

To get to the top of the mount, you need to climb up some 300 steps (hard work, I tell you)! The views from the top though reward you.

If you want to get a bird's eye view of Bangkok, this is an excellent place to get one.
