Zakynthos, is a small Greek island that has a lot of hidden beauty, which hosts the most famous beach on the internet. Easily accessible via ferry boats (1.5 hour ride from nearest port)
This post is specifically about the most famous beach on the internet, Shipwreck beach. I am certain 99% of people have seen it, just google it and you will remember.
My friends and I took a tourist boat ride as offered by a lot of companies on the island, which takes you around the cliffs to shipwreck beach, drops you off and they return every hour for those who want to stay as long as they want. It really isn't worth staying more than the 1 hour minimum.
For the following reasons:
1. Its packed with tourists! (Nothing like the photos online with the empty beach)
2. There are so many boats dropping tourists off that swimming isn't even enjoyable.
3. It's just a normal beach. Nothing exciting to do, plus its fairly small. get your selfies and get out.
However... The boat ride back was more exciting than the actual main-destination!
The boat took us into a handful of caves, where the water is CRYSTAL CLEAR, and blue like that one Gatorade flavor!
Best part was they let us jump off the boat and swim around, and as you can see in the image below, you could see the bottom of the ocean floor even though it was 30-50 feet deep!
PRO TIP: BRING SNORKLING GOGGLES or underwater glasses, this is a must, it is way too beautiful not to witness.
My Pro Tips for visiting Shipwreck Beach:
1. Don't buy tickets for the big tourist boats, instead, rent your own small motor boat and head to the beach early in the morning (8-9 am) before all of the tourist boats start taking off (around 12pm) This way, you will have the beach to yourself and enjoy its true beauty.
2. Bring goggles! Greece's water is the most clear, blue and beautiful I have seen, adventuring below the surface is a must!
3. If you have the time, or even have only one day, I recommend NOT going to the actual beach, but navigating to the above outpost that overlooks the beach on the cliffs (where the first photo on this post was taken). It is unimaginably more beautiful and the busy tourists won't bother you nearly as much.
4. Don't open your eyes underwater or swallow the sea water! It is extremely salty and it burns!
Let me know if you enjoyed this post, as I have many more adventures documented from this summer.
Thanks!
