 Jaisalmer, 'Golden City', is a symbol of the charm of a sandy desert with royal palaces of Rajasthan and fighting camels. This world-renowned tourist destination is situated in the middle of the Great Thar Desert. With  serving as the administrative headquarters of Jaisalmer district, it is  from the borders of Pakistan, Bikaner, Barmer and Jodhpur. This golden city is just 575 km from the state capital of Jaipur. Tourism plays an important role in the economy of the district. The city has been named after the founder of the city Rao Jaisal, who ruled Jaisalmer during the 12th century.

 This golden city is famous for the Rajasthani folk music and dance forms, which are highly appreciated on the global stage. On the occasion of the desert festival on the Sam Rit Dune, the most erotic dance of 'Kalbelia' is done by tribals living here. This is a three-day annual festival to be held in the month of February. Camel races, turbans, and the best mustache competitions attract tourists from far-flung areas. Apart  from this, camping, bonfire, and camel Safari in the Great Thar Desert  gives an unforgettable experience to the travelers who come to  Jaisalmer. 


 Gourmet tribal food

Tourists planning Jaisalmer's vacation can try to tasting the tribal food of Rajasthan. Tasteful  chicken-e-vegetables (bitter-fried chicken lush fry dishes with chopped  vegetables) is the most popular dishes among tourists here. Tasty Kerr Sangri (desert beans and capers) is unique in Jaisalmer. Interested  tourists can try Bhanon potato (boiled potatoes with mint paste and  juice) and kadhi pakoda (cooked flour dumplings in curd sauce), which  are available in Jaisalmer's restaurant.

 Like  any other desert town in Rajasthan, Jaisalmer is also famous for the  royal fortresses, havelis, palaces, museums and temples. The Jaisalmer Fort, which is considered as the beauty of Jaisalmer, is one of Golden City's most famous tourist attractions. The sun sets this yellow sandstone fort with a golden color, hence it is also known as 'Sonar Kila' or 'Golden Fort'. There are many gates in this fort which are known as Akhai Pol, Air Poll, Suraj Pol and Ganesh Poll. The fusion style of the Rajput and Mughal architecture art of the fort attracts tourists' attention. Visitors can see various royal palaces, seven Jain temples and many wells here. Shantinath Temple, Chandraprabhu Temple and Shitalnath Temple are among the most popular religious places in seven Jain temples. 

                        

                        

 The  Palace of Jaisalmer Fort or the Jaisalmer Fort Palace Museum and  Heritage Center situated inside the Jaisalmer Fort premises is the  famous tourist attraction of the city. Visitors can enjoy a view of the entire city from the terrace of the palace. The coronation of the silver throne, bed, utensils, local stamps,  notes, and statues of the royal family are the main attractions of this  palace.
                         

The 180-year-old famine wood fossil park in Jaisalmer is also a famous site to watch. The giant species of giant trees and ancient seashells are the main attractions of this park. Visitors  can see harrier, buzzard, spotted eagle and small pigeon pee, vulture, a  small eagle, a big hawk and a hummingbird in the sand, in Jaisalmer's  Desert National Park. This unique park is the natural habitat of the endangered state bird of Rajasthan, Great Indian Bustard. The best time to visit the park is between November and January. 

 Nathalji's  mansion, Salim Singh's mansion, Petsavan's mansion, Srinath Haveli,  Standard Chowk and other havelis are famous for their unique  architectural style. Travelers  coming to Jaisalmer must see original sea, gopa chowk, Jaisalmer  folklore museum, Tajia tower, Gadshiar lake, big garden, Khur sand  dunes, Sam sand dunes and Kuldhara. Amar Singh Palace is a beautiful royal building, situated on the banks of Amar Singh lake in Jaisalmer. This palace was built during the 17th century by King Maharaj Akhai Singh. Beautiful murals on the walls increase the beauty of the palace.

In addition to the enchanting palaces, some museums are located in Jaisalmer city. The  Desert Cultural Center and Museum show rare collections of ethnic  devices, rare fossils, ancient texts, medieval coins and traditional  artifacts. Apart from this, the Government Museum offers the opportunity to see historical household items, stone utensils and ornaments. 

 How to reach Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer is easily accessible by air, rail and road. Jodhpur airport is the nearest domestic airbase to the city. This airport is well connected to New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport by regular flights. It is connected by daily flights to major Indian destinations like Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai and Bengaluru. Pre-paid taxis are available for Jaisalmer from Jodhpur Airport.

Passenger trains can also reach the destination. Jaisalmer Railway Station is connected to Jodhpur and other major Indian cities by many trains. Deluxe and semi-deluxe buses for Jaisalmer are also available from Jaipur, Ajmer, Bikaner and Delhi. Jaisalmer's golden city receives dry and warm climate throughout the year. Summers, monsoons and winters are the main weather here. The ideal time to visit this destination is the period between October and March.
