It was only my second time traveling to the Hawaii, but we made sure to get in 2 of the islands.
It was December of 2016 and we looked forward to getting out of the cold of the Northwest.
We traveled first to the "Big Island of Hawaii" and stayed a week in Kona.
The first day we drove south and checked out a coffee plantation.
We also saw the Painted Church at St. Benedict Catholic Church.
The next day we took in the Pu' uhonua O Honaunau National Historic Park
This was a cool stop.
We continued south and drove thru the lava fields of Mauna Loa
As we drove on we passed South Point, the most southernly point in the United States
We came upon Punalu'u Black Sand Beach and watched the Sea Turtles.
We continued on to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
We drove down thru the park until we got to the water and saw Holei Sea Arch and steam rising into the air
about 5 miles away.
We took our time and made it back up to Kilauea and watched the glow from the crater until it got dark.
Our next drive took us across the island to Hilo.
We drove Saddle Road the passes between the peaks of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa
We took in the Farmers Market.
Hit a few golf balls and made a new friend.
Went and saw Rainbow Falls which is right in town, and finally went to the Botanical Gardens just outside of Hilo.
If you ever get the chance to visit this wonderful island you should do so.
My next post will be on little hop over to O'ahu.
