Duisburg Inner Harbour (Innenhafen Duisburg)
The Inner Harbour in Duisburg, Germany was built in the 19th century on the Rhine river and was the central trading point of the town for over hundred years. Grain mills and their warehouses were established around the harbour and gave it the nickname "bread basket of the Ruhr district". As the importance of the harbour declined in the 1960's, it remained mostly unused for 20 years. The former industrial area has been fundamentally transformed in 1989-1999 into a district combining employment, housing, culture and water-based leisure activities.
