RE: 7 World’s Continents Photo Challenge - North American Friday week #37 - the absolute winner takes 200 SBD!

in #travel7 years ago

Mauna Kea, Big Island, Hawaii
Mauna kea is the highest peak on the Big Island. It is 4,207 m (13,802 ft) above sea level but measured from its base together with the underwater part, it is over over 10,000 m (33,000 ft) tall and is the tallest mountain on Earth. Thanks to its high elevation, dry environment and stable weather conditions, Mauna Kea's summit is one of the best sites in the world for astronomical observations. Since the creation of an access road in 1964, thirteen telescopes funded by eleven countries have been constructed at the summit.

Cool photo @libork, but this photo is not in a part of the world that is in North America (it is in the middle of the Pacific Ocean). Perhaps resubmit this awesome photo on they day he hosts the oceans contest?

Yep, you are right.
But I was not sure myself where to put my pictures from Hawaii and I asked @czechglobalhosts, the organizer. His answer was North America - see the exchange here: https://steemit.com/travel/@libork/re-czechglobalhosts-7-world-s-continents-photo-challenge-tuesday-of-antarctica-and-world-s-oceans-week-33-the-absolute-winner-takes-200-sbd-20180508t090833378z

I guess that this is what matters here...

Ok cool! Their contest, their rules... but thanks for this feedback and good to know you heard it straight from @czechglobalhosts!

PS. Cool video, leaves some important questions. I'll repost this link here for others to enjoy...

It (Hawaii) is in the middle of the Pacific plate, so I vote for Oceania or Pacific Plate. Hahaha which are not options...

PSS. Nevertheless your photo is awesome and needs a home and would love to visit that place sometime way up high above the Pacific...

This is an amazing shot. It is hard to grasp the scale of the photo unless you view it full screen and you see that tiny dot on the road that is a vehicle.

Thanks a lot, Wes.

Love it up there. Have not been for a long time.
