Every 6 months, as airliners pilots we must have a recurrent training in a full motion flight simulator, which has the same cockpit just like a real airplane, and recreates several scenarios (that for obvious security reasons we cant recreate in a real schedule flight) where the skills and procedures of a pilot need to be checked, such as adverse weather, engine failures, the protocol and steps to follow when one of two pilots is disable, hydraulics system fails, and many other scenarios to keep the security standards in a very high level for the passengers and the aircraft itself.
