Although I never felt that I truly belong to one country or another nor experienced any sort of patriotic feeling, I always enjoyed visiting my hometown, especially the beach.
Throughout the years the city changed, some parts for the better, others for worse. Each time I get here I see more new buildings as old neighbourhoods transform, new malls, restaurants or playgrounds.
A few years back the beaches in the city were extended. Thus from one small strip they turned into a few hundred meters wide.
When I was a child I used to spend a lot of time on the beach playing with my friends. Back then we did not have to use sunscreen, wear swimming long sleeves or to worry but avoiding sunlight between certain hours.
Skin cancer was not on everyone's lips as it is nowadays. We were there in the sun the whole day, playing, swimming, snorkelling or diving for oysters.
Times were different and there were not as many dangers in terms of safety for children. We had no parents supervising us, the older siblings were responsible for keeping an eye on us.
Yes, we could have drowned but I guess we were lucky since we had no such incidents in our group of friends.
We weren't bullied, we were taught to respect the older siblings. I don't recall any of us complaining too much about having his ears pulled, otherwise he would have had to stay home.
None of us wished to spend time alone at home when the whole neighbourhood was at the beach. That would have been the worse punishment ever.
At the beach was where everything was happening: new alliances were being formed, secrets were shared, crushes were revealed and plans were being made.
Needless to add that twenty or thirty years ago the beach looked different. We had no chaise longs, umbrellas or beach bars. Even so, we had an incredible amount of fun.
Trei Papuci was my favourite beach in the city because it was more secluded and no tourists ever ventured there. During the summer months, Constanta city is filled with tourists. Those who can't afford to go to the Mamaia resort, go to the beach in the city.
To access this beach we had to either climb down the steps towards Modern beach and cross it or go down a steep hill, through a narrow path with tall bushes on the sides. Obviously, we preferred the later, because this was faster.
Today I went to the beach at Trei Papuci with my son and it felt as if I went back in time.

My puppy loves the beach, we dont get there as often as I would like as we live in the hills and the beach is about 50 minutes away, not too far but we prefer to hike than swim, in all honesty the last beach we went too was a nude beach on Christmas day last year. I even wrote a post about it, brought a Steemit sign so that we could cover our bits for the photos lol... Was heaps of fun!
That must have been a funny Xmas experience!
@lymepoet we generally have nude Christmas every second year when we don't have the families in the state. We also went on a nude cruise in 2017 through the Carribean which was super awesome 2500 naked people on a boat and we were two of 40 under 40 lol... You can survive anything after that lol... Although it does make ping pong much more or less interesting to watch hahahaha...

Your post remind me of some of the beaches I frequented as a child; when I went back recently, I couldn't access them due to new developments.
Times change, sometimes not for the better...
Trei Papuci is probably the only one which did not change much, except for getting wider.
All great beaches become over commercialised - which spoils it in the end...
I'm sure in another few years it will also follow the same route...

The strip in Mamaia is pretty cool as you can see both the sea and the lagoon.

What a fun post to read! Taking us back in childhood memories. We live in a much different time now. Its really crazy... Had we lived the same way now a days, we would probably be taken away from our parents! Its insane how much parents are expected to hover over their kiddos. I have a 3 1/2 year old and I try to let her explore on her own as much as possible. Shes so independent and brave! Great post!
It's great that you let her learn things on her own and you are not an over protective parent hovering over her at all times! It builds self-reliance and self-confidence!
It definitely does. I think she really needs it, especially because shes an only child. Her imagination is out of a fairy tale book! She could entertain herself for hours... without a tv or tablet! She absolutely loves being outside. Sadly we live in Texas and it gets sooo damn hot in the summer time in the afternoon and then the mosquitoes come out after that. But we spend mornings outside watering the plants and gardens and feeding our chickens kitties.

It was special indeed, because he was able to see where a lot of the stories from my childhood took place.
This place is absolutely gorgeous. I so love that you got to spend your childhood on the beach with your friends. I know we have to watch our kids, but I think it's also so lovely for them to get some time just with their friends. It really made me nostalgic how you described it. I have so many wonderful memories of just hiding away with my friends.
There are so many things we learn from our friends, things that parents or siblings won't be able to help us with.
Truly. All the discoveries and whispers and makeovers and challenges and losses. It's so rich.
Such a lovely story, days out at the beach with family are always fun - it's wonderful you remember fondly past visits to the beach while enjoying this day out with your son.
