Malaysia: The huge 'Kek Lok Si' temple in Penang

in #travel7 years ago

This is one of the most impressive temples I've ever visited and a must-see in Penang! Kek Lok Si is the largest Buddhist temple in Malaysia and even one of the largest of Southeast Asia.

Kek Lok Si means something like "temple of supreme bliss" or "temple of the pure land". With its Chinese, Thai and Burmese influences, it combines the Buddhist schools of Theravada and Mahayana. Dominant, however, is clearly the Chinese Mahayana style.

The whole temple complex is very interesting and there's a lot to discover. Luckily it's not too crowded (at least when I was there) and you can enjoy the tranquility.

One highlight is doubtlessly the main pagoda with the 3 different architectural styles: Chinese, Thai and Burmese. Even Thai King Bhumibol has donated a large Buddha statue here. Although it might be very exhausting, it's totally worth it to take the stairs to the top of the pagoda.

Also you shouldn't miss the gigantic Kuan Yin statue. This 30 meter high statue of the female Chinese Bodhisattva has been built in 2002. From there you will also have a fantastic view at George Town.

How to get to Kek Lok Si temple?

The temple is located in Air Itam, about 7 kilometers away from George Town. The temple buildings are already impressive from the far when you approach them from Air Itam town.

From George Town you could simply take taxi but keep in mind that it can be very expensive and you might get overcharged. A great alternative is probably Uber but I didn't try it in Penang. The cheapest way to get around in Penang is surely the bus. To get to the temple you can take the bus 204. Price from the Komtar Station is about 2 Ringgit.
