California: Big Basin Redwood State Park

in #travel8 years ago (edited)

Hello Steemians,

This weekend I visited Big Basin Redwood State Park, California's oldest state park.

The biggest attraction here (literally) are the ancient coasts redwoods - among the tallest and oldest trees on Earth. Some of them measure more than 300 feet tall and 50 feet in circumference, and are estimated to range from 1000 to 2500 years old.

Sequoia sempervirens, the Big Basin's coast redwoods, are native to the Unites States and grow only along the coast, from Southern Oregon to Central California. They are part of a once-huge ancient forest of which today remains less than five percent. Sempervirens actually means ever living, pretty accurate giving the life span of the trees, and Sequoia presumably is honoring Sequoyah, the 19th century inventor of the Cherokee alphabet.

Wildlife is thriving here: foxes, coyotes, bobcats, rattlesnakes (fortunately none in my way today), birds, newts, lizards. My wildest encounter was with a Steller's Jay, a beautiful blue bird which apparently flies faster than it takes me go focus the camera.

Californians love nature and they are doing a great job preserving it (there are more than 100 state parks here). I am planing to visit many more, and until then here are some of the pictures I took today:

I want visit this park in one day. I think that's the only reason I'd visit the US.

Beautiful! I've seen these trees live and in person. It's hard to explain to people the sheer magnitude and size of these trees. Their nothing short than amazing and a must see!

Pictures don't make justice to this place.
