The old flour mill at Rowsley, was built in 1874 by John Caudwell and is now a grade II listed building. Mills have been built on the same site for over 400 years.
Caudwell's Mill is a water mill powered by the river Wye, and was run as a family business for over a century.
Since it closed as a business the mill was bought by a charitable trust and has been run by them as historical visitor attraction for over forty years. They sell flour made at the mill in bags from 1 kg to 25 kg.
The other buildings on the site include workshops for a blacksmith, glass blower and stone mason. We talked to the blacksmith who was making 40 brackets for Victorian style lamps for a railway station.
There is also a craft gift shop and a vegetarian and vegan café called 'Country Parlour' which serves home made, freshly cooked food.
The interior of the café is that of an old barn, with wood beams and pillars, and the seating is made from reclaimed wooden church pews.

Nice piece! Started following you and I'm curious for your next posts. Good luck!

Hi @historyrob I am fortunate to live in the county of Derbyshire in England, which is rich in pre-historic monuments and historic buildings from the Industrial Revolution onwards. The first factories, the cotton mills, were built in our valley; Amber Valley. I liked your first post and look forward to your view of history. Nikki
