Resizing The World - Why Africa Is Bigger Than You Think

in #travel8 years ago (edited)

Taking a look at the popular world map will reinforce the notion that Russia and North America are the big boys constituting much of the world's landmass. And look at Greenland - the sheer vastness blows your mind.

But now, skip this map and take a look at the next one. Africa, South America, India and Australia are suddenly inflated and the shapes are oddly distorted. What you see here is the true size of the world. Source

As the world is a sphere, the 3 dimensional surface area can not be accurately transformed onto a 2 dimensional map. You can either preserve the shape or the size, but not both of them. Both maps above are legit, with the first map reflecting the true shape (called Mercator Projection) and the second showing the true size of the continents (called Peters Projection). The Mercator Projection is used almost everywhere and has become an essential part of our world view. It gives excessive weight to regions far away from the equator and additionally biases in favor of the northern hemisphere. I'd really like to see Peters Projection getting a lot more attention, because sometimes it's just fun to learn that our conceptions about the world are wrong.

Let's make a little challenge!

Can you guess the country which benefits most from the Peters Projection?

Maybe because some people are waking to the possibility that the world is not a sphere, but more flat like a pancake.

@sourdough more like Christians trying to convince people that the world is flat and that the entire universe orbits around us. Yes NASA has lied in the past but some Christians take these lies and exaggerate them to stretch the flat earth theory because it makes them feel good.

Best of luck trying to find ONE flat earth theorist that isn't Christian. I have tried many times and could not find one except for those who don't associate with organized religion but still believe in Christ
