Milos is part of the Cyclades islands and is famous for the amazing beaches. The famous statue of Afrodite of Milos (the god of beauty) is from the island. Milos is a low profile “family” island. Nightlife is almost nonexistent and the whole island is not famous for the picturesque villages. There are a couple of bar restaurants in the port of Adamadas and many taverns (not recommended) but other than that nothing special. The main village is “Plaka” and it is the only village that somehow reminds Cyclades style with white houses, shops, taverns (not recommended) and small alleys to walk around. From the castle of “Plaka” there is a beautiful sunset worth to watch.
I will start with the basics and then will move on to the beaches which is the main attraction of the islands.
Accommodation:
This is really difficult and I have not any advise to give. You should definitely stay in the port of Adamadas or alternatively in Apolonia. We stayed in Adamadas in a supposedly very nice hotel resort call “Alexandros village”. Well I cannot recommend it to no one. We payed euro 165 per night which is by far very expensive. When we checked in late in the night we found out that all towels were really dirty. I mean dirty in a very disgusting way. The bathroom was not cleaned properly and we could see some hair here and there. This is unacceptable for such an expensive hotel. So our experience with the room not good at all.
Avoid “Alexandros village”.
Food:
You should definitely avoid Adamadas port for food. It is very touristic and quite expensive for what they offer. I have asked around many locals where to eat in Adamadas one night and most of them recommended us “Mikros Apoplous”.
The below photo is from what we had there. A Greek salad, an octopus and spaghetti with shrimps. If to some of you this looks nice, believe me it was not. The octopus was hard to eat with not taste and the spaghetti were cooked 10 hours ago. In addition to that we told them that my wife has various allergy in sesame and in the beginning the brought us another salad full of sesame. I mean for the love of god..Get serious..
If you want to eat properly in Milos you should go to “Apolonia”. The only place that has truly fresh fish is a tavern in Apolonia called “En Alion”. The photo below is what we had there. It may not look something fancy but believe when I say it was really nice and fresh fish.
Another place where the food is amazing is in “Mandrakia” in a tavern called “Medousa”. It is a very beautiful small tavern with amazing food. You should be prepared though to wait 10-30 min before you find a table because it is always packed.
I know that this octopus may not look nice but it was I think the best I ever had. Even their frites were really tasteful and very well cooked.
Beaches:
There are some really unique beaches in Milos. If you want to properly explore them and see the real beauty of the island you should take the boat tour of the island. I will go in more detail in another post about the boat tour which is definitely something not to miss.
Sarakiniko beach
One of the most famous beaches in Milos due to the landscape.
!
Plathiena
A nice small beach
Firi Plaka
For me this is the best beach of the island
Mandrakia
Clear crystal waters and then you can go eat in “Medousa”
There are also many other beautiful beaches in Milos but not very easily accessible so we skipped them. These include papafragas, gerontas, tsigrado, the old lady jump and many other.
Kimolos island
You can take the ferry boat from Apolonia and go to the Kimolos island for a day. Kimolos is a very small island definitely woth to visit if you have some time.
The photo below is from "Pressa" beach in Kimolos
Sunsets
From Papafragas beach
From Plaka castle
Other places to visit
Village of klima
This is a small picturesque fishing village. The houses are build on the sea and have "garage" colorful doors where the fishermen park their boats. Now days some rent these houses to tourists but quite expensively. I think something like euro 300-400 per night. If you do decide to stay the night there prepare yourselves to visit the toilet quite often during the night since the sea water basically flows in the house during the night.
This is a photo from Klima village
I leave you with a video wrapping up the above. Do not miss the post to follow with the boat trip to the round of the island.
It looks great and i thought that greece is ugly.
