White Water Rafting on Chilliwack River - B.C., Canada (Photos)

in #travel6 years ago

White water rafting is something both @haileyscomet and I have wanted to do for a long time, for me as far back as I can remember but the opportunity has never presented itself to either one of us until now. As you drive down the road to the campground we are at, you pass by signs for a rafting place that it say is just 15 minutes away and after passing it several times, Hailey decided to look it up online. We found that is was not that expensive so we decided to do it and booked our spots for the most extreme one at Chilliwack River Rafting!

It was raining the night and morning before and the temperatures dropped so we were concerned about being cold but we found out they provide wetsuits for you to wear to help keep you warm. When we got there the rain had stopped, but it was still cloudy and in the low 60's. The place was a neat little compound that had places for people to stay, a sauna, kitchen, and much more. It was a cool place and reminded us both a lot of a drop zone and how they people are there, it seems extreme sports brings very similar people together. All of the staff had cool accents from Canadian to Swedish to Australian, it was very diverse, along with the people we went our rafting with some were also from Texas, some from Toronto and a Danish family.

After we ate the provided lunch of veggie chili, salad, rolls, and cake, we got our gear on and got on the bus to drive up the river. Riding in the bus reminded of being in school and added to the child like fun of it all quite nicely. We then got briefed on all of the hazards and risks in the water and instructed on how to avoid them and what to do it if they happen. It was a bit intense hearing all of the danger lurking but when going down rapids there is a lot of expected danger involved, so it was of course very necessary. We then picked our positions on the boat, Hailey and I were on the second row from the front and we were off!

The ride was very relaxed for the first few minutes and then we hit our first little rapids and it was so fun and exhilarating, I wanted more for sure! It was scary but the good kind, the type that makes everyone laugh and smile from ear to ear. Yes the water was freezing, but the suits made it fine and it all just added to excitement of it all. The two women we were sitting in front of we very scared, loud and pretty whiny too, but it also was just kind of what you expect in a group situation, someone has to be that person! After only a bit longer and hitting a few more fun rapids, we docked the boats and headed for a secret and hidden waterfall...

Stay tuned for part 2!
