Inside the Colosseum - Roma Holliday 2

in #travel7 months ago (edited)

Hello,

As promised in my last post, here are some pictures of the inside and underground of the Rome Colosseum. To get the underground tour you have to book a guide quite early it is not so easy to get. However i can recommend you to take this tour if you are interested in seeing some of the tunnels and structure of this building.

In the underground was it where gladiators where getting ready for their fights, wild animals have been brought here to be hunted during the shows. Of course it was als the workspace for many slaves.

The construction took about 10 to 20 year's and it was completed AD 80 under Titus.

Back then it could hold up to 80.000 spectators. The architecture was so good that even modern stadiums still adopt parts of it.

At the beginning, there was no underground structure. This was added later.

The underground was covered with beams of wood.

Apparently they even filled it up with water to have ship battles inside.

When i was there, watching the oval middle of the Colosseum i could easily imagine how it must have been there during the Roman Empire.

Actually the entrance was for free for the average Roman.

It must have been quite a thrill for a gladiator stand here and fight for their lives.

According to what i read, gladiators could become quite famous and wealthy if they did good.

Now i just wonder if the food was the same like today?

But i suppose because back then the food was equally good, perhaps better. I wish i could travel back in time and experience the old roman life.

Thank you for browsing through, i hope you like the pictures.
